What “non-violent open world” means here

We looked for cozy PC games where a child can roam, with no timers, no health to lose and no one to fight. Some are true open worlds. Others, such as Abzu, are guided. We say so for each one. All facts on this page were checked on 8 October 2026.

Age ratings are listed where we could find them on the ESRB, the developer or a rating database. Parents should check the age rating themselves on the store page, because ratings differ by region and can change.

  • If your child likes animals: try Alba, Little Kitty, Big City or Adorable Adventures.
  • If your child likes to build: try Minecraft on Peaceful or Haven Park.
  • If you want a game that lasts: pick Yonder. It takes about 10 hours for the main story.

Small open worlds

A Short Hike

Who it is for: a child who wants a first open world with nothing to fail.

You are a bird named Claire who climbs a mountain park to find a signal. You can hike, glide, fish, swim and chat with other hikers. There is no combat. It is rated E for Everyone by the ESRB. It is very short, and some players find the main path over before they have seen everything. Steam lists no full voiceover, so your child reads the dialogue.

Developer: adamgryu | Year: 2019 | Platforms: PC, Mac, Linux, Switch, PS4, Xbox One | Length: about 1.5 hours for the main story, 4.5 hours for everything (HowLongToBeat) | Deck: Verified | Steam: Overwhelmingly Positive | Steam page

Smushi Come Home

Who it is for: a young child who likes cute animals and light puzzles.

You are a tiny mushroom, lost in a forest. You run, glide, climb and swim, talk to forest creatures and learn real mushroom facts in a journal. The Steam page says the game has light platforming and puzzles, and the Switch listing says there are no time limits or game overs. ESRB lists it as E for Everyone (secondary source). Some jumps may need a little help from a parent. It is short.

Developer: SomeHumbleOnion | Year: 2023 | Platforms: PC, Mac, Switch | Length: about 3.5 hours (HowLongToBeat) | Deck: Verified | Steam: Overwhelmingly Positive | Steam page

Lil Gator Game

Who it is for: a child who likes play, make-believe and friends.

You are a small gator who plays on an island and makes friends by helping them. You climb, glide, collect craft supplies and build a playground. There is no health bar, and ESRB rates it E for Everyone with no descriptors. But it is not fully free of fighting: you can hit cardboard enemies with a stick sword. It is short, and the world is more a playground than a big map.

Developer: MegaWobble | Year: 2022 | Platforms: PC, Switch, PlayStation, Xbox | Length: about 3 hours (HowLongToBeat) | Deck: Verified | Steam: Overwhelmingly Positive | Steam page

Adorable Adventures

Who it is for: a child who loves animals and a slow, gentle story.

You are Boris, a baby boar. You follow scents through meadows, forests and caves to find your family after a forest fire. The developer says it is rated PEGI 3 and ESRB E. The developer estimates 3 to 4 hours for the main game. It is new (April 2026) and has Windows only on Steam. The developer lists a GTX 1060 as the minimum graphics card, which is high for a game like this. Check the Steam Deck status on the store page.

Developer: Wild Sheep Studio | Year: 2026 | Platforms: PC | Length: about 3 to 4 hours (developer estimate) | Steam: Very Positive | Steam page

Haven Park

Who it is for: a child who likes to tidy, build and chat.

You are Flint, a bird who takes care of a camping park. You find resources, build campsites and meet campers with small requests. ESRB lists it as E for Everyone (secondary source). The developer says it takes 2 to 4 hours. Critics rated it as average, and some found the tasks and puzzles thin, so it is a small, quiet game and not a deep one. We did not check its Steam Deck status.

Developer: Bubblebird Studio | Year: 2021 | Platforms: PC, Mac, Linux, Switch | Length: about 3 hours (HowLongToBeat) | Steam: Very Positive | Steam page

Animals and nature

Alba: A Wildlife Adventure

Who it is for: a child who loves animals and likes to take photos.

You are Alba, a girl on holiday on a Mediterranean island. You photograph animals, help neighbours and gather volunteers to save the island’s wildlife. The ESRB rates it E for Everyone with no descriptors. The island is small, and the game is closer to a guided walk than a big open world. Steam lists no full voiceover, so your child reads the text.

Developer: ustwo games | Year: 2020 | Platforms: PC, Switch, PlayStation, Xbox | Length: about 2.5 hours (HowLongToBeat) | Deck: Verified | Steam: Overwhelmingly Positive | Steam page

Little Kitty, Big City

Who it is for: a child who loves cats and a bit of cheeky play.

You are a small cat who wants to get home. You explore a city, make friends with other animals and knock things over. There is no combat. The ESRB rating is listed as Everyone. It is a playful game, so be ready for some chaos. Steam Deck HQ says it plays well on the Deck, but we did not find an official Valve rating. For more cat games, see our cozy cat games guide.

Developer: Double Dagger Studio | Year: 2024 | Platforms: PC, Switch, Xbox | Length: about 2.5 hours for the main story, 7 hours for everything (HowLongToBeat) | Steam: Overwhelmingly Positive | Steam page

Abzu

Who it is for: a child who loves the sea and quiet, beautiful scenes.

You are a diver who swims through reefs, caves and ruins, with schools of fish all around you. There is no talking. It is a guided trip, not a free open world. It is the one pick with some darker notes: the ESRB rates it E for Everyone with Mild Fantasy Violence (sharks attack your drones, and an artefact fires lasers), and Steam shows PEGI notes for Fear and Violence. Check it first for a very young child. It is also short.

Developer: Giant Squid | Year: 2016 | Platforms: PC, Switch, PS4, Xbox One | Length: about 2 hours (HowLongToBeat) | Deck: Verified | Steam: Very Positive | Steam page

A bigger world

Yonder: The Cloud Catcher Chronicles

Who it is for: a child (or parent) who wants a large, calm world with farming and crafting.

You explore the island of Gemea, clear a purple fog called the Murk, craft goods, trade with locals, raise animals and run a farm. There is no combat. The ESRB rates it E for Everyone with Crude Humor (there are fart jokes in one area). It is slow and long for a first game, and it asks you to gather and craft a lot. Its Metacritic score is 70. Steam shows no full voiceover.

Developer: Prideful Sloth | Year: 2017 | Platforms: PC (Steam) | Length: about 10 hours for the main story, 24 hours for everything (HowLongToBeat) | Deck: Verified | Steam: Very Positive | Steam page

Sandbox

Minecraft (Peaceful difficulty)

Who it is for: a child who wants to build with no end in sight.

Choose Peaceful and hostile mobs do not spawn, and you regain health quickly. Minecraft.net lists the game as ESRB E10+ and PEGI 7, because combat is part of it. The ender dragon can still attack in Peaceful mode. Your child can also switch the difficulty, so set a rule at home. Public multiplayer servers are a separate matter; Minecraft.net and other guides tell parents to supervise them. Minecraft is not on Steam, so we link no Steam page.

Developer: Mojang Studios | Year: 2011 | Platforms: PC, Mac, Linux, Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, iOS, Android | Length: open-ended | ESRB: E10+, PEGI 7 (Minecraft.net)
