This page explains what information ashortsail.com and the game A Short Sail collect, why, and what you can do about it. A Short Sail is made by Yos Riady, a solo developer ("we" on this page). If you have a question, email hello@ashortsail.com.
The short version
- We use two analytics tools on this website to see how many people visit and which pages they read.
- We do not sell your data, and we do not use it for advertising.
- You do not need an account to use this website, and we do not ask for your name.
- The game keeps your saves on your own device.
Analytics on this website
We use Google Analytics and Formo. When you visit a page, they record things like the pages you view, the page that sent you here, your browser and device type, your approximate location (country or city, worked out from your IP address), and how long you stay. Each tool gives your browser a random ID, so that it can tell a new visitor from a returning one.
We use this only to understand which pages are useful and where visitors come from, for example a trailer or a post. Google keeps this data in line with its settings for our account (user-level data for 2 months, by default).
The same Google Analytics ID is also on our itch.io page, so we can see visits there too. itch.io has its own privacy policy for everything else on its site.
Cookies and browser storage
- Google Analytics sets cookies whose names start with
_ga. They hold a random ID and last up to 2 years. - Formo keeps a random anonymous ID in a cookie or in your browser's local storage.
- The sea sounds button remembers in your browser's local storage if you turned the sound off. This stays on your device.
Videos
Trailers from YouTube load only when you press play. Until then, nothing is loaded from YouTube. When you press play, the video comes from youtube-nocookie.com, and Google's privacy policy applies to it.
The game
Your progress is saved on your own device: in your browser's storage for the web demo, and in the app's folder for the desktop versions. The game itself does not use analytics.
Some versions of the game have a feedback button. If you use it, we receive what you write, a screenshot of the game (you can turn this off before you send), the spot you pointed at, and some game details: where you are in the game, your progress and play time, your screen size and the game version. We use this only to fix and improve the game. We do not ask for your name or email address there.
Hosting
This website runs on Vercel. Like any web host, Vercel handles your IP address to deliver pages and to keep the site safe, and it keeps short-lived technical logs.
If you email us, we keep your message and your email address so that we can reply. We do not add you to any list.
Your choices
- You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings. The site works without them.
- You can stop Google Analytics with Google's opt-out browser add-on, or with a content blocker.
- You can ask us what data we hold about you, or ask us to delete it. Email hello@ashortsail.com. Depending on where you live, you may also have the right to complain to your data protection authority.
Children
A Short Sail is a gentle game for everyone. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children, and the analytics above do not identify you by name.
Changes
If we change what we collect, we will update this page and the date at the top.
