Rooms and cottages

Hozy

Who it is for: players who love the small joy of wiping a dusty window.

You return to a faded hometown and restore its homes one room at a time. You clean, paint, scrape and place furniture, and each room has a resident with a small story. There are no timers, scores or penalties, and the furniture is picked so that it always looks good together. It is short, and reviewers mention clunky controls and uneven polish. A free DLC, Hozy: Hideaways, added three more locations in September 2026.

Developer: Come On Studio | Year: 2026 | Platforms: PC, Mac | Steam Deck: Playable | Length: about 3.5 hours for the main story (HowLongToBeat) | Steam: Very Positive | Steam page

Tiny Glade

Who it is for: players who want to build a cottage with no rules.

You doodle walls, roofs, paths and gardens, and the game adds bricks, ivy and sheep for you. There is no management, no combat and no goal. That is the downside too. Critics note that it has limited content. Mac support came on 13 May 2026.

Developer: Pounce Light | Year: 2024 | Platforms: PC, Mac, Linux | Steam Deck: Verified | Length: about 3 hours (HowLongToBeat, 13 reports) | Steam: Overwhelmingly Positive | Steam page

Unpacking

Who it is for: players who like puzzles and quiet stories.

You pull things out of boxes and fit them into a new room, over eight house moves. You learn about a woman’s life from what she owns, and the story is told only through objects. It is not a fix-up game, since you do not repair anything. But the home-making is the heart of it. It has a set order and little room for free design, and you can finish it in an evening or two.

Developer: Witch Beam | Year: 2021 | Platforms: PC, Mac, Linux | Steam Deck: Verified | Length: about 3.5 hours (HowLongToBeat) | Steam: Very Positive | Steam page

Renovation jobs

House Flipper 2

Who it is for: players who want a long job with money at the end.

You buy a wrecked house, clean it, repair it, redecorate it and sell it for profit. It also has a build mode, a story mode, and online co-op for 2 to 4 players through a free DLC. It is a business sim at heart, so it is calm but not stress-free. Some jobs feel like work, and the long runs of cleaning can get dull.

Developer: Frozen District | Year: 2023 | Platforms: PC | Steam Deck: Verified | Length: about 14.5 hours for the main objectives, 31.5 hours for 100% (HowLongToBeat) | Steam: Very Positive | Steam page

House Flipper

Who it is for: players who want the original, often at a lower price.

It is the 2018 game that started the series. You clean, repair, paint and furnish houses for clients, then flip your own. It is older than the sequel, so check the sequel first if you want the newer game.

Developer: Empyrean | Year: 2018 | Platforms: PC, Mac | Steam Deck: Verified | Length: about 13 hours for the main objectives, 50 hours for 100% (HowLongToBeat) | Steam: Very Positive | Steam page

PowerWash Simulator

Who it is for: players who find cleaning calming and want to see a before and after.

You wash dirty places with a pressure washer, and the sound and the clean lines are the reward. You clean, not decorate, so it is a partial fit. It is also very repetitive, and the full game is long.

Developer: FuturLab | Year: 2022 (Early Access in 2021) | Platforms: PC | Steam Deck: Verified | Length: about 40 hours for the main objectives, 64 hours for 100% (HowLongToBeat) | Steam: Overwhelmingly Positive | Steam page

A home inside a bigger life

Stardew Valley

Who it is for: players who want a farm and a town to fix, with a home they upgrade.

You inherit a run-down farm and slowly turn it into a home. You can also restore the town’s broken community center. It has optional combat in the mines. It is a farming life sim, not a decorating game. The day clock and the many chores can feel like pressure.

Developer: ConcernedApe | Year: 2016 | Platforms: PC, Mac, Linux | Steam Deck: Verified | Length: about 53 hours for the main goals, 172 hours for 100% (HowLongToBeat) | Steam: Overwhelmingly Positive | Steam page

Garden Paws

Who it is for: players who like to run a shop and see their home and town grow.

You inherit your grandparents’ farm. You sell what you find and use the coins to expand your home and to commission new buildings in the town. It also has fishing, mining and farming. The Steam page says there is a dungeon with monsters, so it is not fully free of combat. The game is in English only.

Developer: Bitten Toast Games Inc. | Year: 2018 | Platforms: PC, Mac | Steam Deck: Playable | Length: unclear; HowLongToBeat has only 3 main-story reports, with a median of 40 hours | Steam: Very Positive | Steam page

Spiritfarer

Who it is for: players who want a floating home that grows with each guest.

You build a boat, add a house for each spirit you take aboard, and care for them until it is time to say goodbye. You farm, cook, fish and craft along the way. The theme is death, so the story is moving and often sad. Much of the day goes on chores such as farming and cooking.

Developer: Thunder Lotus | Year: 2020 | Platforms: PC, Mac, Linux | Steam Deck: Verified | Length: about 25 hours for the main story, 43 hours for 100% (HowLongToBeat) | Steam: Very Positive | Steam page

Cozy Grove

Who it is for: players who want a small daily routine and no rush.

You are a Spirit Scout on a haunted island. Each day you help ghosts, craft, and bring colour back to the island and your camp. The game runs in real time and is built for one to two hours of play per day, so a story takes months. That daily limit suits some players and annoys others. On Steam it is for PC only.

Developer: Spry Fox | Year: 2021 | Platforms: PC | Steam Deck: Verified | Length: about 73 hours for the main story across many days (HowLongToBeat) | Steam: Very Positive | Steam page

Disney Dreamlight Valley

Who it is for: players who want a bright life sim with a lot to decorate.

You restore a valley, help Disney and Pixar friends, and build and decorate homes for them. Steam lists in-app purchases and many paid DLC packs, and the base game is long.

Developer: Gameloft | Year: 2023 (Early Access in 2022) | Platforms: PC | Steam Deck: Verified | Length: about 46 hours for the main objectives, 136 hours for 100% (HowLongToBeat) | Steam: Very Positive | Steam page

Our own game: A Short Sail

A Short Sail is a cozy 3D sailing game. You are a tabby cat with a little boat. You deliver mail between little islands, fish by day and night, and make friends with the islanders. There is no combat and there are no timers. You also help islanders and fix up things at your home cove, but it is one part of the game and not a building sim. The author of this site makes it, so weigh our words as you see fit. A free demo plays in your browser on itch.io. The full game is coming soon to Steam and itch.io.
