Relaxing boat games beyond sailing: motorboats, kayaks, houseboats, ferries and fishing boats. Submerged, FAR, Cast n Chill, Spilled! and more.

By Yos Riady · Published · Last checked:

The most relaxing boat games are Submerged: Hidden Depths for a calm motorboat trip through a flooded city, Cast n Chill for slow fishing from a little boat, and Spilled! for a short, feel-good cleanup. If you have a VR headset, Kayak VR: Mirage is the calmest of all. This list covers boats of every kind; for sailboats only, see our cozy sailing games.

Not just sailboats

Our cozy sailing games list is about wind and sails. This one is about any boat at all: motorboats, kayaks, houseboats, ferries, rafts and fishing boats. The common thread is that the boat is how you play, not just a way to skip a loading screen. We kept three overlaps (Spilled!, Becalm and Spiritfarer) because they are too good to leave out.

The list

Submerged: Hidden Depths

Who it is for: players who want to explore by boat with nothing chasing them.

Two siblings explore a flooded, overgrown city in a motorboat. You steer between towers, climb ruins to find seeds that heal a strange black plant, and gather collectibles and boat upgrades. There is no combat, no timer and no fail state, and storms add mood but no danger. Some reviews call it shallow, since many collectibles are just “sail up and press a button.”

Developer: Uppercut Games | Year: 2022 | Platforms: PC, Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox | Length: about 4.5 hours | Steam: Very Positive | Steam page

Cast n Chill

Who it is for: players who want a boat, a rod and nothing else.

You putter around side-scrolling pixel-art lakes and rivers in a little boat with a pet for company, catch fish and buy upgrades. An idle mode lets it fish for you. It is light on story and repetitive by design. More in our relaxing fishing games.

Developer: Wombat Brawler | Year: 2025 | Platforms: PC, Mac, Switch 2 | Length: about 16 to 18 hours | Steam: Very Positive | Steam page

Spilled!

Who it is for: players who want a short, satisfying job.

You pilot a small solar boat and scoop up oil slicks, bottles and old drums from dirty waters, and rescue animals along the way. Each level ends a little cleaner than it began. It is very short, about an hour, and the Steam Deck rating is only Playable because some text is small.

Developer: Lente | Year: 2025 | Platforms: PC, Mac | Length: about 1 hour | Steam: Very Positive | Steam page

Becalm

Who it is for: anyone who needs a five-minute break.

You sit in a boat and drift toward the sunset through soft, painted seas. You do not even steer. It is free, and it is more a breathing exercise than a game, which is the point.

Developer: Colorfiction | Year: 2019 | Platforms: PC, Mac, Linux | Length: 5 minutes per trip | Price: free | Steam: Very Positive | Steam page

Kayak VR: Mirage

Who it is for: VR owners who want the most peaceful paddle possible.

You paddle a physics-based kayak with motion controls through places like Costa Rica, Antarctica, Norway and Australia, and you can change the time of day and the weather. There is free roam, a hands-off tour mode and some races. It needs a VR headset, there are only a few base locations, and paddling can tire your arms.

Developer: Better Than Life | Year: 2022 | Platforms: PC VR, PS VR2 | Length: open-ended | Steam: Very Positive | Steam page

Collector’s Cove

Who it is for: players who want a cozy life sim on the water.

A friendly sea creature pulls your houseboat between random islands. You farm on deck, fish, forage and fill a collection book. There are no enemies and no fail states. Reviewers say the loop gets repetitive and a little lonely, with few characters to meet. It is also new, with fewer reviews than most games here.

Developer: VoodooDuck | Year: 2026 | Platforms: PC, PS5, Switch | Length: open-ended | Steam: Very Positive | Steam page

A Short Hike

Who it is for: players who want a boat as a lovely side trip.

The main game is a hike up an island peak, but a 2020 update added a motorboat you can rent and keep. Zipping around the coast is one of the nicest things in the game. Just know that boating is a side activity, and the whole game takes about 1.5 hours.

Developer: adamgryu | Year: 2019 | Platforms: PC, Mac, Linux, Switch, PS4, Xbox One | Length: about 1.5 hours | Steam: Overwhelmingly Positive | Steam page

FAR: Changing Tides

Who it is for: players who want a quiet, wordless voyage.

You captain a strange ship across a flooded world. You raise the sails, stoke the engine, solve light physics puzzles and later dive below the waves. It is beautiful, but lonely and melancholic, and storms can damage the ship. Running between stations gets busy, so it is less cozy than the games above.

Developer: Okomotive | Year: 2022 | Platforms: PC, Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox | Length: about 5.5 hours | Steam: Very Positive | Steam page

Spiritfarer

Who it is for: players who want a long, emotional game with a home on the water.

You are Stella, who ferries spirits across the sea. You build cabins and gardens on your boat, cook and fish for your passengers, and help them let go. It is tender and gorgeous, but it is about death, and the middle has a lot of chores.

Developer: Thunder Lotus | Year: 2020 | Platforms: PC, Mac, Linux, Switch, PS4, Xbox One, mobile | Length: about 25.5 hours | Steam: Very Positive | Steam page

Dredge

Who it is for: players who like a calm loop with a creepy edge.

You run a small fishing trawler around remote islands and fit your catch into a grid-style hold. Daytime fishing is soothing. Nights bring horror, sea monsters and a dark story, so only play it if you like a little dread.

Developer: Black Salt Games | Year: 2023 | Platforms: PC, Mac, Switch, PS, Xbox, mobile | Length: about 9.5 hours | Steam: Overwhelmingly Positive | Steam page

Raft

Who it is for: friends who want to build a home on the open sea together.

You start on a few planks with a shark circling, hook floating junk, and slowly grow your raft into a floating base with sails. It is great in co-op. It is a survival game first, with hunger, thirst and that shark, so it is not truly relaxing.

Developer: Redbeet Interactive | Year: 2022 (full release) | Platforms: PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S | Length: open-ended | Steam: Very Positive | Steam page
